About Defender Sightings

Defender Sightings started in 2024 as a simple habit: photographing Land Rover Defenders in the wild and posting them. Not concours cars on a lawn with a trophy next to them. Working Defenders, parked badly outside shops, caked in whatever they drove through last weekend.

The habit turned into an Instagram account, the account turned into a map, and the map turned into this: a community map of real sightings, plus a library of guides for the people who see one and start doing sums in their head.

What is actually here

Two things, and they are different on purpose.

The map. Sixty confirmed sightings across fifteen countries, every one submitted by somebody who took the photo themselves. It is the part nobody else has, because you cannot generate it. Somebody has to actually see the car.

The guides. Forty articles on buying, running, fixing and regretting a Defender. Which years to avoid and why. What the 200Tdi does that the Puma does not. Why a thirty-year-old farm vehicle costs more than a new family car. The sort of detail you only get from people who have been under one.

Who runs it

I do. My name is Vanessa and I have been collecting these sightings since 2024, mostly because I cannot walk past a Defender without stopping. The writing is mine, the photographs are mine or sent in by the community, and nothing on this site is published because somebody paid for it to be.

The community side runs on Instagram at @defendersighting, where most submissions arrive before they reach the map.

How this pays for itself

Honestly, barely, and I would rather say so than pretend otherwise.

There is a small shop with things for people who slow down when a Defender comes the other way. Products are posted from Estonia. The seller is Silver Trading OÜ, and the full company details are on the terms page.

If a link on this site ever earns a commission, it is marked and disclosed on the page it appears on. If something is ever sent to me for free, that gets said in the article. No exceptions, and no quiet affiliate links buried in a sentence.

Corrections, sightings, complaints about my opinion on the Puma engine: info@defendersightings.com. Corrections especially. The guides get updated when somebody who knows better writes in, and that has happened more than once.

Common questions

Can I submit a sighting of my own Defender?

Yes. Plenty of the pins are people’s own cars. The only rule is that you took the photo.

Do you buy, sell or broker Defenders?

No. This is not a dealer and never has been. The guides exist so you can judge a car yourself, not so you can be sold one.

Can I republish your photos or articles?

Not without asking first, and submitted photographs belong to the people who sent them. A link back is always welcome.

Will you review my product?

Possibly, but it gets disclosed as a gifted item and the review says what I actually think. If that is a problem, it is better not to send it.
